Implications

If the work succeeds:

  • Human agency becomes an explicit design consideration rather than an afterthought.

  • Institutions distinguish assistance from substitution and advice from authority.

  • Choice and responsibility remain protected where they form part of the value itself.

  • Privacy is treated as a condition of freedom, not merely as data compliance.

  • Social AI is evaluated for dependency, manipulation, relationship quality, and effects on independent judgment.

  • Education and work are designed to expand human capability rather than merely remove people from processes.

  • Systems preserve meaningful contestability, pluralism, experimentation, interoperability, and exit.

  • AI development is directed toward wider opportunity, human development, and plural forms of flourishing.

Agency is not an automatic veto on automation. The work must identify when automation expands effective freedom and when it displaces something the objective itself should preserve.
