Most of the numbers that run your life are now made by machines talking to machines.

The price of your stocks. Your mortgage rate. Your insurance premium. What your portfolio says you're worth. Behind each number, algorithms are trading against, lending to, and pricing off other algorithms, at speeds no human follows.

Ask the builders how they know the numbers are right and the answer is always the same: more data in, better answers out.

But some questions don't have answers sitting in the data. What is this company worth? Will this treatment work? What do people actually want? Those answers don't exist until real people test, trade, argue, and choose — and a machine fed yesterday's data will answer tomorrow's question instantly, confidently, and wrong.

Machines take over more of those questions every year. No one has drawn the line between the questions they can answer and the ones they can't.
